Ontario just keeps getting gassier

Ontario saw a huge spike in fossil gas burning for electricity production in 2023, with gas-fired generation increasing by 26% compared to 2022!

This is more evidence of how Ontario has become more and more dependent on polluting gas to keep its lights on despite plenty of better alternatives.

But because alternatives like increasing use of solar and wind and importing peak power from Quebec have largely been ignored, the province has used dirty gas to fill the gap left by an aging nuclear power system.

We need to reverse this trend ASAP if we want to seriously reduce our climate impact (and not just talk about it) and to reduce pollutants filling the air over communities like Brampton, Toronto, Halton Hills, and Napanee where gas use has been ramping up.

The Ford government has taken a small step to resume the deployment of zero carbon wind and solar after taking a five-year pause, but it is nowhere near enough. We need to triple our wind and solar capacity and work closely with Quebec to store variable renewable power while improving energy efficiency here at home. That’s how we will be able to phase-out gas by 2035 and lower electricity costs – not by waiting for phantom new nuclear projects or costly reactor refurbishments to be completed.

Please send a message to Opposition Party leaders Marit Stiles (NDP), Bonnie Crombie (Liberals), and Mike Schreiner (Greens) asking them to commit to tripling wind and solar to clear the way for phasing out polluting gas.

Thank you for making your voice heard.
