Greenbelt lands returned, but advocates want all protections reinstated for Duffins Rouge agricultural preserve

Local groups head to Queen’s Park to get message across

While Premier Ford promised to reinstate all protections for Greenbelt land, critics say that hasn’t been done in the case of the  Duffins Rouge Agricultural Preserve.

Two community organizations that fought for the provincial government to return the Duffins Rouge Agricultural Preserve (DRAP) to the Greenbelt are demanding that it reinstate all four protections that were removed from the large parcel of land.

The Ontario government reinstated protections in the Greenbelt Act and the Duffins Rouge Agricultural Preserve Act at a hearing on Nov. 30. But the protections of the Central Pickering Development Plan were not reinstated and the Agricultural Minister’s Zoning Order, which had previously protected the land, was also not returned.

“By only returning two of the four prior (DRAP) protections, the Ford government is not keeping its promise to Pickering residents,” says Craig Bamford with Stop Sprawl Durham.
