Dear Friends in Canada,

Wildfires are raging across Canada’s forests – yet, the Ontario government is still planning to destroy the Greenbelt across an area the size of 17,000 hockey rinks.

The Greenbelt is one of the most biologically rich protected areas in all of Canada, and this plan would threaten 29 at-risk species just to make way for sprawling housing developments.

The public consultation showed massive local opposition to the project. And Premier Ford’s government completely ignored them.

That’s where we come in: The federal government has already taken action by freezing its infamous 413 highway project. Now a nationwide outcry could push Ottawa to stop Ford’s plan before it even starts. Add your name now and when it’s massive, we’ll deliver our call straight to the federal government and leading media. Sign and share widely now!

The Ontario government argues it needs to blaze through the Greenbelt to build new homes. But a new experts report confirmed that the province could build 2 million houses without bulldozing through a protected area home to 78 at-risk species.

The Greenbelt plays a vital role in the life of local communities and against climate change: it filters and replenishes groundwater, cleans the air we breathe, and reduces the risk of floods. The wildfires raging across the country show we need to defend protected areas more than ever.

But if this plan is allowed to proceed, it may set a dangerous precedent for other local governments to prioritise profits over our rights and open up additional protected areas for development.

That’s why we must save the Greenbelt from this destructive housing development plan, and a groundswell of protest could push the federal government to freeze this plan until a comprehensive environmental impact assessment is conducted! Add your name now and share this campaign with everyone!

Our community has consistently come together to safeguard our future and the well-being of our planet. We are currently grappling with the urgent reality of a climate crisis, and every acre of protected land holds immense significance in our efforts to fight it. That’s why we all need to defend the Greenbelt today, for the betterment of our own generation and those to come.

With hope,
John, Mo, Antonia, Melanie and the rest of the Avaaz team
