Last week, Ontario took yet another determined step down the road toward climate destruction. In an era when everyone from the United Nations to the oil-and-gas-friendly International Energy Agency has said “no more fossil fuel infrastructure,” the province has announced a major expansion of fossil gas-fired electricity generation.

The Ford government wants the people of this province to believe that we have no other choice but to burn more polluting and climate wrecking fossil fuels to keep our lights on.  As usual, they have ignored the huge pile of evidence to the contrary because certain powerful interests would prefer that we continue to burn gas.

We need to ramp up our efforts to point to these lower cost and climate saving alternatives. And we need your help to do that. We want to spread the word about the fact that offshore wind can meet all of our electricity needs if Ontario just lifted its inexplicable moratorium on offshore wind power. We want to continue to show just how much money – and power – we can save with deep efficiency measures, whether that is heat pumps or full building retrofits. We want to press for smart EV charging that makes the most of a fast-growing EV fleet by making it a power storage solution on wheels and not just a way to get from A to B.

These are important stories because they show that we are not trapped in the past with no choice but to use expensive and outdated solutions like fossil gas and risky nuclear to meet our electrification needs.

And here is the really excellent news: We have two great friends who are going to double your donation so we can get really, really loud. The M.H. Brigham Foundation and an anonymous donor have already matched the $29,281 in donations you have donated to date – thank you for your generosity! Now they have dug even deeper and told us they are willing to match donations up to $45,000. This is an incredible endorsement of the work the OCAA does and we can’t thank them (and you) enough.

As we all know, there is no time left to waste on lowering our climate impact.
