An orientation session will be scheduled for Simcoe County councillors to learn more about the province’s controversial Bill 23, the More Homes Built Faster Act. A Jan. 31 report by the planning department indicated many changes under the act directly affect the county.

“Matters relating to development-charges reform, the diminished role of conservation authorities, and removing all legislated planning responsibilities from certain upper-tier municipalities … will fundamentally alter the way development-approval processes are conducted, natural heritage resources are protected, how growth is co-ordinated on a regional scale, and how growth-related capital infrastructure is paid for (and by whom),” stated the report.

A tree-planting program, funded by the county, will continue to spread its branches across the region. Councillors have approved $35,000 in annual funding for the 2023-26 term, which is $5,000 more than has been provided each year since the program began in 2007.

The money is intended to increase reforestation on private lands by offsetting the cost of tree seedlings and/or planting services.
