‘Four more years’: Mayor, deputy mayor of Essa Township set to be re-elected by acclamation

Essa Mayor Sandie Macdonald, along with Deputy Mayor Mike Smith, are set to serve another term, after nobody else filed to run against them in the October municipal election.

Now that the deadline has passed for anyone interested in running for council in the upcoming municipal election, it would appear the top two positions in Essa Township will go uncontested.

Mayor Sandy Macdonald and Deputy Mayor Mike Smith will be re-elected through acclamation, according to the unofficial list of registered candidates posted on the township’s website.

Clerk Lisa Lehr confirmed to Simcoe.com that she did not receive any other applications for those positions as of the Aug. 19 deadline at 2 p.m.

Municipalities will post the certified results and declare any acclaimed positions on Aug. 22 after 4 p.m.

Macdonald, a veteran member of council for the past two decades, was the first woman to be elected as the township’s mayor in 2018. Prior to this she served as deputy mayor and councillor.
