Editor’s note: BarrieToday has asked council candidates in neighbouring Springwater and Essa townships to provide a synopsis of why they are running for public office. Municipal elections take place Oct. 24. The following is from Shawn Bubel, who is running for council in Essa Township in Ward 2. For more election coverage, visit our 2022 municipal election page by clicking here, where you can find candidate profiles and other election news.

There is a distinct spirit of community, proud traditions and a strong desire to protect our way of life in Essa Township.

I am running to help my local council build onto established foundations for an even better and stronger Essa.

An even better Essa means getting more support from higher levels of government to improve facilities and infrastructure, and it means promoting our hidden gems.

A stronger Essa means continued fiscal and environmental sustainability, smart growth planning, and it means bringing more experience to the council table.

I stepped away from ‘party politics’ in 2018 after many years of serving under federal and provincial Members of Parliament. In recent years, I have been at the municipal level and found there to be a much greater spirit of collaboration, and far more of a focus on “getting things done.”

The public has had enough of politicians who over-promise and under-deliver.

They have been tuned out. A once-engaged citizenry now sees a polling station as about the last place they want to go to.

Voters are not asking for much: “Work hard, know your stuff, make sound decisions and give me good governance.”

There is a better way to ‘do’ politics. I deliver on the job requirements, have a passion for community and a record of working productively with stakeholders from across a great spectrum.

I would be honoured to represent my neighbours, if elected.
