Want to hear where Barrie’s mayoral candidates stand on issues facing the city ahead of the Oct. 24 election?

The Barrie Chamber of Commerce will host a Meet the Candidates evening on Wednesday, Sept. 28 beginning at 6 p.m. at the Barrie Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 147, located at 410 St. Vincent St.

The chamber says all seven certified candidates will be invited to attend.

As a non-partisan organization, the Barrie chamber says it is dedicated to providing community members with the information they need in order to make the best decisions for themselves and their businesses on election day. Members of the public are encouraged to attend and meet their mayoral candidates for the 2022 city election.

Each candidate will be given an equal opportunity to speak for a predetermined amount of time. The chamber will provide topics curated by our members, the media and the general public. The topics could include things like affordability, housing, workforce development, transportation and infrastructure concerns etc.

The candidate may choose to speak to one or all of the topics in the time allotted; their time is their own. The goal is to give the candidate an opportunity to focus on what they feel are the biggest business priorities and give the public an opportunity to see if their platform aligns with what’s important to them.

The chamber says this is not a debate, so there will be no Q&A from the audience.

The second part of the evening will be a meet-and-greet where each candidate will be available to meet the public and business community in a more social setting. Organizers will be using both floors of the legion, with the upper for the information session and the lower for the meet-and-greet.

The chamber will be providing light refreshments, and the bar will be open to help support the legion.

Ward councillor candidates will be welcome to attend, but there will be nothing formally in place for them at either part of the event.

If you have a topic or issue you would like to hear about from the candidates, you can send them to info@barriechamber.com.

  1. Dieter Mueller says:

When we elect a Mayor and/or Council, we should be mindful of their prior action or inaction. Mayoral hopeful BARRY WARD has failed the City of Barrie residents, the environment and the pristine waters of Lake Simcoe over the past 22 years that he’s been on Council. How so? He has at no time championed the idea of repaving up to 100 Barrie streets paved with hazardous ASBESTOS-Asphalt mix nor has he taken action to stop the polluting of Barrie with contaminated spent winter sand swept up from the streets and reused year after year. Common sense and a backbone is all it takes. Let’s be sure to vote for a candidate that has both.
