Action on climate needed now, says Wasaga Beach climate action team leader

Wasaga Beach could see a climate action committee in place by the next term of council.

The timing of when the town could create that committee is still up in the air, as councillors will be presented with two motions that, while perhaps achieving the same ends, are somewhat dissimilar in their content.

At council’s July 28 meeting, two notices of motions — one from Coun. Joe Belanger and the other from Mayor Nina Bifolchi — call for the creation of a climate action advisory committee — that would advise council on matters related to climate change.

Both motions will be considered at council’s Aug. 11 meeting of co-ordinated committee.

Belanger’s motion notes that the town is “lagging well behind in addressing these serious environmental concerns, versus neighbouring municipalities.”
