Katy Austin — Springwater Ward 1
2018 AWARE Simcoe questionnaire – Katy Austin
From Barrie Advance
Council accomplishments: I am proud to have been a part of this term’s council. Council members and staff have been very professional and dedicated to running the business of the township efficiently and with a clear vision for the future.
Here in Elmvale, council built a splash pad, completed extensive work on Yonge Street, Lawson Avenue and Amelia Street, approved several new home developments, provided financial incentives for businesses to improve their facilities and helped save Elmvale District High School by entering a joint use agreement for the new facilities and providing $500,000 in funding.
Going forward: If I am re-elected, I want to continue the update of Springwater’s Official Plan and encourage new homes and businesses in Elmvale. I also want to encourage regular cultural activities in the new Gateway Park.
Background: I grew up and attended school in Barrie and graduated from the University of Windsor. I have lived in Elmvale for 40 years and raised my family here.
For over 20 years I was a Simcoe County elementary school teacher and coach.
I was active in the fight against Site 41 and have been a strong advocate for the “zero waste” lifestyle. I am also on the Good Vibes Coffee House working group.
Council roles: Council rep on library board, Economic development working group, Regular newspaper column, Accessibility advisory committee, Council rep on Elmvale BIA, EDHS shared facility fundraising committee, Community assistance plan advisory committee.
