AWARE Simcoe alert

We need to grow the Greenbelt to protect our precious water resources in Simcoe County. The health and viability of groundwater, watersheds and wetlands are all under threat from out-of-control sprawl.

Those who attended the Simcoe County Greenbelt Coalition forum on October 19 will have heard the message loud and clear from a variety of perspectives:

– Indigenous: Jeff Monague (Chimnissing), Becky BigCanoe (Chippewas of Georgina Island)
– Environmental: Bob Bowles (citizen ecologist)
– Agricultural: Bernard Pope (Ontario Farmland Preservation)
– Residents: Nancy McBride (Tottenham Water Keeper)
– Scientific: Bill Shotyk (University of Alberta)
– Municipal: Bill French (Springwater Mayor)
– Provincial: David Crombie (Coordinated Land Use Review Panel, by video)

Presently the Greenbelt skirts around the borders of Simcoe County, as if our water and natural heritage is worth less. Don’t allow the province to leave us out of the Greenbelt a second time!

Even though there is already more than enough designated development land within the Greater Golden Horseshoe to accommodate the province’s population increase projections, the development and construction sectors have been lobbying hard for the need to continue making cheap land in Simcoe County available to them.

Make your voice heard! The deadline for comment is Monday October 31. Protecting our water, forests and foodlands is the best thing we can do to benefit the rest of the Greater Golden Horseshoe and our future generations. Tell the province you want Greenbelt protection for Simcoe County.
