Water, Indigenous rights, Justice for Mercury Survivors

From River Run 2016

Thursday, June 2, 12pm, Queen’s Park — Join us for a massive arts-based action to ensure real answers from the provincial government!

Over 40 years ago, people in Grassy Narrows were poisoned by mercury from a paper mill upstream from their community; the mercury contaminated the river and poisoned people. Grassy Narrow is demanding justice because they are still dealing with the ongoing health impacts of this avoidable disaster.

For decades, community members have been on the front lines of the movement to defend the earth and to uphold Indigenous self-determination, culture, and spirituality. They have driven away logging companies who were set on clearcutting their forests, but the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources continues to support these destructive industries with its new Forest Management Plan, which calls for clearcut logging on their territory. We must stop them, and you can help.

Your support today will help Grassy Narrows continue their fight to protect their rights and the water, air, land and creatures that we all depend on.

This spring, people from Grassy Narrows will travel over 1,7000 km to Toronto for River Run 2016, to continue their strong leadership in demanding justice for their community and the environment. The week will culminate in a large creative march to Queen’s Park on Thursday, June 2. We need your support to make this happen!

Watch this inspiring music video by Grassy Narrows youth about their hope, pride, and commitment to protect their land and their culture, and encourage people to donate to help bring them to Toronto for River Run.
