A Free Press Online query as to why the Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority (NVCA) invokes the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act to shield its summary of permit approvals/refusals, from the public agenda, has sparked a review of the policy.

Currently, the monthly updates compiled by Barb Perreault, Manager, Regulations & Enforcement, are “forwarded for discussion in closed session if required.”

The NVCA’s approvals process is in the spotlight in Beeton as it relates to the County’s special permit issued to Tecumseth Estates permitting the clear-cutting of about 30 acres of woodlot on its 9th Line property. The NVCA was one of the key approval agencies whose comments carried weight at the County level.

“As you know, we are bound under the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act to protect personal information yet release information which is not protected,” wrote NVCA CAO Gayle Wood told Free Press Online via email, in reply to why the entire report would be confidential. “The Staff Report that you reference contains names and addresses of applicants who received permits and approvals from NVCA. This information is protected. However, you have raised a good point and staff will review our reporting format and determine if there is further information that we can release at future Board meetings.”
