The County of Simcoe is closer to determining where it will construct two new waste facilities.

A request for expression of interest process (REOI ) has just wrapped up to build a list of potential sites. Private and county-owned sites were under consideration.

“A high-level report will be presented to committee of the whole in June (tentatively scheduled for June 23) detailing the REOI process, the number of submissions and how the process will move forward,” said Rob McCullough, the county’s director of solid waste management.

The county is selecting sites for an organics processing facility and a materials management facility. The organics plant will turn the county’s 11,000 tonnes of green bin waste into fertilizer.

Today, the county’s green bin waste is trucked to Hamilton and processed by AIM Environmental. In 2015, haulage and processing is expected to cost $1.35 million.

A short list of sites will be presented to county council this summer with a public consultation planned for the fall.

The preferred site will be named in early 2016.
