News release from Springwater Township

Cycling was on the agenda at Mondaynight’s Council meeting where Mayor Bill French presented cheques to Cycle Simcoe and the Springwater Policing Committee for their bike safety program.

Cycle Simcoe is a project through Barrie/Simcoe Cycling Club, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to developing a sustainable Cycling Strategy for Simcoe County. The project fundamentals include signage, safety & education, mapping, stakeholder support/development and research & measurement. The Township of Springwater presented Brendan Matheson, Cycle Strategy Coordinator with a cheque for $2,000 to help move the project forward.

“This cheque will provide much needed funding for the Cycling Strategy,” says Brendan. “It will be used to print route maps, as well as for online marketing and promotion of the cycling opportunities in the area.”

A $1000 dollar cheque was also presented to the Springwater Policing Committee in support of their bike safety and awareness program. The Committee will team up with the OPP and the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit to provide interactive bicycle safety seminars in local schools. The Committee will also hold a poster contest for local students this spring and the winner will receive a new bike and helmet.

“Learning bike safety at a young age is important,” says Paul Stephens, Project Leader of the Springwater Policing Committee Bicycle Safety Initiative. “Teaching our students the rules of the road will not only keep them safe, but keep our traffic flowing smoothly.”

“Cycling is a great way for our residents to get out and get active,” says Mayor Bill French. “Supporting these organizations in their efforts to improve cycling in our community will contribute to an active and healthy lifestyle for our citizens.”
