Unless a member of council calls for a recorded vote, a show of hands and the final count is all that’s noted in the official minutes of a meeting.

Ward 7 councillor Shira Harrison-McIntyre has requested the issue of recorded votes be discussed as “new business” at the next committee meeting scheduled for March 23.

Currently, any member of council can call for a recorded vote after a motion has been tabled and moved. Ms. Harrison-McIntyre’s objective is to make them more routine part of council business. It would require an amendment to the procedural bylaw.

“I will be working on the details between now and the next COW meeting. I’ll look to see how it is done elsewhere,” she told Free Press Online via email this afternoon. “Yes I had in mind that it would be for every vote to avoid having to ask for a recorded vote each time.”
