John Mascarin of Aird & Berlis, has been re-appointed Integrity Commissioner (IC) for the Town of New Tecumseth until March 1, 2019 (which extends into the next term of council).

Mr. Mascairn has served in an interim capacity since December 2013. Though he hasn’t had to investigate or incur any expenses since then related to New Tecumseth, his hourly fee has increased from $550 per hour to $645 with this renewal.

The IC acts as an independent investigator on complaints related to alleged breaches of the code of conduct for members of council, and/or for members of local boards; and the application of any procedures, rules and policies of the municipality and local boards governing the ethical behaviour of members of councilĀ  and of local boards or of either of them.

In his capacity, Mr. Mascarin, or a designated associate, will have “free access to all books, accounts, financial records, electronic data processing records, reports, files and all other papers, things or property belonging to or used by the municipality or local board that the Commissioner believes necessary for an inquiry.”

If the IC concludes rules were broken, penalties include a reprimand and or suspension of remuneration for up to 90 days.
