Federal Green Party candidates for the two Barrie ridings were nominated on Sunday.

Bonnie North — a registered nutritional consultant who also represented the Green Party in last June’s provincial election — will run for the party in Barrie – Innisfil.

The Barrie – Springwater – Oro-Medonte Green Party candidate is Marty Lancaster, a physics and environmental science teacher at Bear Creek Secondary School and former councillor in Oro-Medonte Township.

North recently completed her sustainable urban agriculture and horticulture certificates from the University of Guelph and is now enrolled online in MIT’s Challenges of Global Poverty program.

She serves on the board of Living Green and hopes to launch a Homegrown National Parks initiative in Barrie through the David Suzuki Foundation. She also operates EcoDigs, a health and environmental lifestyle coaching service.

“My political passion is food justice and sovereignty issues, and I plan to leverage this to build up the Green strength in this new riding leading up to the election in October,” North said.

Lancaster leads the Apollo Project at Bear Creek, the first in Simcoe County where students fundraised and installed solar panels on the school. He also coaches volleyball and enjoys cross-country skiing, kitesurfing, cycling and hockey.

He has also been an executive member of the Simcoe North Green Party, where he focused on fiscal responsibility, helping residents and making environmentally sound decisions.

“I am very excited to be the candidate, and I will again be playing to win, not least because Canadians who believe in true democracy and a sustainable economy have no other suitable ballot option,” Lancaster said.
