PENETANGUISHENE – In a “rare” move, the federal government is giving Penetanguishene $500,000 for its Champlain celebrations – the maximum it can dole out for a historical legacy project.
“It’s a big deal for us. We had to work pretty hard,” said Simcoe North MP Bruce Stanton.
He said he has been working with local committees, First Nations groups and the four north Simcoe municipalities since 2010 to secure as much funding as possible for the event this summer.
“It’s going to make up a big chunk of the legacy project, (which is a park),” Stanton said, adding the fact Penetanguishene got the full amount is “a bit rare.”
