PENETANGUISHENE – The long-awaited sewage treatment plant in Penetanguishene is expected to be fully completed in May or June, according to town staff.
Discussion about the plant, the plans for which have been ongoing for several years, was sparked at a Dec. 17 council meeting when a biosolids contract extension was approved.
The contract is for “continued use of external sludge storage until the new biosolids and thickening system is online and running efficiently” at the new plant, read a council document.
According to the same report, the “anticipated completion” of the sewage treatment facility is March 2015, but director of public works Bryan Murray said after the council meeting it could be May or June before final completion.
April is the estimate timeline for “substantial completion,” he said. That means the plant will be operational, but not have curtains for the windows or landscaping outside.
Murray said the town is “still within budget” for the $28-million project.
