Elected duty to municipal office in New Tecumseth comes with a paycheque, (one-third tax-free), health benefits, car allowance/mileage, phone and internet access, paid trips to out of town conferences, free dinner invitations, VIP treatment, in exchange for attending council and committee meetings, public sessions, and answering calls, sometimes in the middle of the night. Evening and weekend hours included. All of which is guaranteed (barring unforeseen circumstances) for four years.

 

In 2013, the last full financial year reported, the mayor’s position returned $47,166 in remunerations and expenses claimed, including the base salary of $34,495, plus approximately $14,000 for County duties.

 

The deputy mayor’s packet totalled $38,016, including a base salary of $25,990, plus, about $19,000 from the County.

 

A council seat pays a base salary of $20,163. But it could reach a combined package of $32,804 as it did for Bruce Haire, Ward 7, in 2013, or bottom out at $27,684, as it did for Jim Stone, Ward 8.

 

The next four year cycle begins Dec. 1, 2014 with the Inaugural Meeting of the new council elected Oct. 27th. Nominations for office closes at 2 pm this Friday.
