Bob Marrs running for New Tecumseth mayor

NEW TECUMSETH – Another Alliston councillor is gunning for a promotion in the fall municipal election.

Current Ward 1 Coun. Bob Marrs is running for the New Tecumseth mayor’s seat.

He said a number of people have been asking him to run for mayor, but it was a recent health scare that has him aiming for the top spot.

In the fall he was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. Since then he’s had chemotherapy, radiation and surgery, and has been given a clean bill of health.

“I had pretty well almost a death sentence last fall, I’ve been given my life back and I’m all clear, so there’s a reason for…so I said go big or go home,” he said.

“I’ve got a good clear slate, I’ve got my energy back and I’m not going to sit in the background, I’m going to continue my fight for principle over politics.”

He said the bottom line is “making sure we have a good, sustainable town.”

The other registered candidate for mayor is Rick Milne, the current deputy mayor. Longtime Mayor Mike MacEachern has announced he’s not seeking re-election.

Current Alliston Coun. Jamie Smith is looking to move up to the deputy mayor’s seat, along with newcomer Glen O’Leary.

The race for the Tottenham seat at the council table also grew today.

Chris Ross, known for his work with Help the Kids Play, is running for the Ward 8 seat. Former Tottenham councillor Jess Prothero is also in race for Ward 8.

Madhunt March 21 – Ward 1 councillor Bob Marrs filed his intentions today to run for mayor of New Tecumseth. Mr. Marrs joins deputy mayor Rick Milne, as the only candidates to date signed up to replace three term mayor Mike MacEachern. The Ward 1 councillor was first elected in 2003. He was reelected in 2010. Chris Ross, an active member of recreation programs in Tottenham, has filed to run in Ward 8. Former councillor Jess Prothero is the other candidate.
