The County of Simcoe, in partnership with the Ontario Invasive Plant Council (OIPC), is hosting a complimentary public workshop to educate residents about ways to recognize and manage invasive plants. The workshop will be led by the OIPC on Tuesday October 22, 2013 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Simcoe County Museum. “Invasive plants are a growing threat to the long-term sustainability of Simcoe County forests,” said
Graeme Davis, County of Simcoe Forester. “Simcoe County Council has shown leadership by
supporting strategies to mitigate this issue within County forests. This workshop is designed to give
residents basic knowledge so they can better recognize and manage problems on their own
properties.”
The workshop will cover the following topics:
? How to identify invasive plants
? How to create control and management strategies for your property
? Relevant legislation to support invasive plant management
? Status of invasive plants and control initiatives in the County of Simcoe
? Attendees will also receive a complimentary Guide to Invasive Plant Management from the
OIPC
Invasive plants are plants that become established in an area outside of their natural range. Since
invasive plants don’t have natural control agents in their new environment, some species can spread
quickly and cause significant damage to forests or agricultural areas. Emerging threats in the Simcoe
County area include Garlic Mustard, European Buckthorn and Dog-strangling Vine.
