Keeping our community voice strong
From Midhurst Ratepayers Association September Newsletter
September has shaped up to be a busy and successful month for the MRA.  Thanks to  your support, we had a strong showing at the Special Council Meeting on Tuesday, September 17th regarding the MSP.  In their attempt to  present the MSP as a “done deal”, Council omitted many detrimental facts and distorted others.  Residents heard everything from fear-mongering about lawsuits to evasive, “lite” answers to the many probing questions residents asked on May 14th.
Council’s relentless pro-MSP stance, regardless of the facts and the consequences, means that our community must increase its pressure on them to do the right thing for Springwater, its environment and its future generations.  Come out to our Information Meeting on October 1st at 7:00 p.m. (Midhurst Community Hall, 49 Doran Rd.) to get the real facts about the MSP and how you can help stop this disastrous mega-development and preserve our beloved community. It’s NOT too late.
Our voice is now louder thanks to the recent addition to our ranks of some well-regarded organizations.  Most notably, well-known water activist Maude Barlow with her Council of Canadians has recognized the injustice, as well as the environmental and financial jeopardy, of the Midhurst Secondary Plan.  This prestigious organization will be dedicating some of their energy and resources to our cause.
Environmental Defence, which has just released a report on the enormous costs of urban sprawl, also sees the potential dangers of the MSP, and has agreed to look further into our case and lend its support where it can.
Finally, the Brereton Field Naturalists Club recognizes the severe environmental impact that the MSP could have on the Minesing Wetlands, water sources and farms.  They, too, have signed on to our cause to increase awareness of the potentially catastrophic damage to the environment of ill-conceived development.
And to those who figured we were down and out, the truth is we’re just beginning!  Stay tuned for more big announcements and events!  But remember, all these initiatives and efforts require that WE the community, stand united, keep pressure on council and expose the truths of the MSP.  It will be our efforts that make the difference.  The support of major allies reinforces the legitimacy of our cause and strengthens our resolve to fight on and WIN!!
