Simcoe Grey MP Kellie Leitch will be sworn in this morning as the Harper government’s new Minister of Labour, and Minister Status of Women.
Ms. Leitch will replace Lisa Raitt, who moves to Transport, as part of Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s cabinet shuffle. She is currently Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development and to the Minister of Labour. And, she replaces Rona Ambrose in the Status of Women portfolio, a position held previously by former Simcoe Grey MP Helena Guergis.
The Simcoe Grey MP was first elected to parliament in the 2011 federal elections. Ms. Leitch is a pediatric orthopedic surgeon.
The federal Minister of Labour is responsible for labour issues under its jurisdiction . These include: Canada Labour Code, the Employment Equity Act, the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service as well as the implementation of health and safety legislation. Status of Women Canada “works to advance equality for women and girls.”
As a member of Cabinet, Ms. Leitch will no longer be able to advocate on behalf of her constituents without breaching conflict of interest provisions.
On the pay side, In addition to her base MP salary of approximately $160,000 a year, Ms. Leitch’s pay cheque will increase by $76,700, with a full-time driver and vehicle included.
