Clean, unpolluted water. We can’t live without it. Healthy ecosystems need it too. Will you help Environmental Defence protect water.
We have a big responsibility. The Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River make up a staggering 20 per cent of the world’s freshwater. This is drinking water for millions of people, and important habitat for countless fish, animals, and plants.
We have made a crucial first breakthrough in the protection of these precious ecosystems, and now we need your help to see it through.
On Monday, Ontario Minister of the Environment Jim Bradley re-introduced the Great Lakes Protection Act as the new government’s first legislative item. This is a huge step forward for better protection of our precious Great Lakes!
Pollution, destruction of wetlands, and invasive species. These are all urgent threats to the health of the Great Lakes. Right now, we have a huge opportunity to press for stronger protection targets. Progress toward these protection targets must also be reported publicly.
We have been working for years to protect water, lakes and rivers. That’s why we were encouraged when the new Ontario government put Great Lakes protection front and centre in the legislature. The proposed Act would be a huge step toward protecting the Great Lakes. But right now, it is only proposed.
As a member of the Great Lakes Protection Act Alliance, Environmental Defence believes there’s strength in numbers. I hope you will join us and strengthen our call for environmental protection.
Thank you for helping to defend our water,
Claire Malcolmson
