My name is Adam and I am 11 years old. This is part of the speech that I wrote for my class:
‘Imagine this with your eyes closed; a quiet, gentle breeze blowing, trees rustling, birds chirping, laughter of families in the background and a certain peace and calmness that feels unfamiliar in daily life.
I have just explained to you what it is like to be at Springwater Provincial Park.
This park is a treasured place where families have enjoyed visits to the animal sanctuary, cross-country skiing, picnics, community group events and hiking on woodland trails.
This local treasure holds fond memories for many people. It has a First World War cenotaph recognizing the veterans of Vespra and honouring their sacrifice for Canada.
(In) October 2012, the Ministry of Natural Resources voiced a decision that the park was no longer worth keeping operational and that they intended to close it. This meant the park would no longer be maintained or staffed.
Families need a place to spend quality time connecting with the environment. Animals that are injured need a place to call home and we need to stand up for what we believe is important to us.
I have learned that sometimes things that are important to you can be taken away.
You then have two choices to make: stand idly by or fight for what you believe is right and just. I am standing up for this park, for these unwanted animals, for the trees, for the entire treasure that is called Springwater Park. This place is my little piece of heaven and I hope it is protected for future generations.’
