Dr. John Bacher, the noted environmental author and historian is speaking on the need for another ON billion trees
When: 7-9pm on January 17th, 2013
Where: Room 144 (east end of the building on the ground floor), University College, 15 King’s College Circle, Toronto, ON
His 2011 book (Two Billion Trees and Counting: The Legacy of Edmund Zavitz) is the history of the tree nursery system in Ontario that he and E.C. Drury established. In 1905, the two men toured the “wastelands” of Orr Lake, Agus and the Midhurst Plains. They chose the Midhurst Tree Station site because of the abundant water across the road, where Springwater Park was soon started after 1922.
John is working on his next book which (I believe) lists Crown Hill’s own, E.C. Drury as one of Ontario’s all-time 100 Environmental Heroes. Copies of his excellent book, into its 4th printing From Dundurn Press, will be available at the talk. John will be speaking at the annual meeting of the Simcoe and Barrie Historical Associations in March.
Join us in taking the time to understand why we need to re-establish public tree nurseries to fulfill the dreams of men like Zavitz and Drury.
Note: Dr. Bacher is a very active and valued member of the SPCC Advisory Council and we’ll see everyone next Sat at the Barrie Farmers’ Market.
