Idle No More protest in Midland – and across Canada
AWARE Simcoe Update Dec. 21 2012
Around 30 people responded to the callout for the Idle No More round dance flash mob in Midland today. They marched at Highway 93 and Hugel, beating drums and singing. Passing motorists honked in support.
Midland Mayor Gord McKay stopped by before the protest started. Beausoleil First Nation Councillor Jeff Monague talked of the Harper government’s failure to consult on changes to the Indian Act, and of the need for all Canadians to take a stand against Bill C-45, the omnibus legislation than has dismantled important environmental protection. Across the land, small and large groups of aboriginal people and supporters demonstrated their opposition to the new legislation and their support for Chief Therese Spence of Attawapiskat, now in her 11th day of a hunger strike to demand respect for First Nations from the Conservative government. Then some of the protesters moved into the mall.
