Councillor wants compensation for town
By Christy Burton Bradford Topic Dec 06, 2012
As Toronto Transit tunnel boring machines Holey, Moley, Yorkie and Torkie corkscrew their way from Downsview to Vaughan, the cost to the BWG area is mounting, according to Ward 3 Councillor Gary Lamb.
“There is $250 million worth of soil to get rid of, adding to the cost of construction, so dirt’s coming this way,” he says.
He points to New Tecumseth’s experience with its new airport. The numbered company that owns the aerodrome facility wants to continue taking fill for two years to level a runway and create a second runway along with new taxi ways, berms and hangar foundations.
The traffic created by thousands of dump trucks using Hwy.  9 to bring fill to the property has created headaches for that town.
“You need cruisers guiding traffic,” he says. “We’re now on the radar because we’re on the highway.”
BWG is also on the radar for the dirt brokers because New Tecumseth council wants a moratorium on receiving fill.
Councillor Lamb says at least there should be some compensation for the town.
“This dirt has become so valuable there’s now a dirt broker. The contractor wins because he gets business, the trucker wins because he gets work, the dirt broker wins because he puts everyone together, the recipient wins because he gets fill, but what do we get?” he asked during the staff report segment of Tuesday’s committee of the whole meeting. “Meanwhile they’re beating the hell out of our roads.”
“I want to be brought up to speed on what exactly will happen,” he told the committee. “New Tech’s asking for a moratorium on it, so I’m just asking that we be brought up to speed so we know what we’re facing and so that we can be adequately compensated.”
