Mi’kmaq lawyer and Ryerson professor Pam Palmater will speak at a rally to be held at Queens Park to protest Bill C-428 and the Harper Conservatives’ agenda to extinguish native rights. The rally will start at 1 pm on Wednesday November 28 in front of the legislature in Toronto. A ceremony will happen before everything starts, at 12:15.
Beth Brass Elson, from Beausoleil First Nation (and a member of the AWARE board), is the MC.
Bill C-428, an Act to amend the Indian Act, is a private member’s bill introduced by Conservative MP Rob Clarke and supported by the government.
There has been no consultation. This is a violation of First Nations inherent and treaty rights. Taken with other proposed legislation, Bill C-428 is part of a Harper government effort to dismantle treaty rights, turn First Nations into municipalities and gain control over resources in First Nations territory.
This action is open to all families, supporters, groups, advocates and leaders at all levels! It will start with a ceremony. Be prepared to march and dress warmly as it could be cold!
