BARRIE – Ward 8 Coun. Jennifer Robinson has resigned for health reasons.
With more than two years left in her term, the former 35-year-old figure skating champion turned politician resigned Wednesday night.
“During the last 18 months, I have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunities and will always cherish the privilege of representing the residents of Ward 8,” she said in a statement.
“I have met so many wonderful Barrie residents. I will also miss my fellow council members and personally wish them every success as they continue to advance the vision we collectively share for Barrie.”
Mayor Jeff Lehman said council would miss her “unstoppable optimism” and her residents would miss her ability to listen.
“Jennifer Robinson brought her unstoppable optimism, shining personality and a strong belief in Barrie. She was a tremendous ambassador for Barrie and she will be sorely missed,” Lehman said.
“In her time on council, I know that anyone who dealt with Jennifer came away feeling they had been heard and well represented.”
Council will declare the Ward 8 seat vacant at its next meeting, then determine how to fill the vacancy. The city could opt to appoint or conduct a by-election.
The last time a councillor resigned, the city chose to appoint. In February 2006, Ward 3 Coun. Patrick Brown vacated his seat to enter federal politics. From about a dozen applicants, Barrie chose former Ward 10 Coun. Alison Eadie, who filled the seat for several months until the November 2006 election.
During the vacancy, Ward 8 residents can contact the city clerk’s office with concerns.
“I will also be available to meet with residents to ensure their interests are addressed and concerns are heard,” said Lehman, “and staff in the city clerk’s office will assist in handling local matters until such time the vacancy is filled.”
Robinson could not be reached for comment.
