On Monday May 28th farmer Rob Wright hopes to make a presentation to Springwater Council to outline how the Midhurst Secondary Plan will impact his farming operations. He hopes other farmers and those concerned about where our food actually comes from will join him.
Building a small city of 10,500 dwellings in the middle of an active farming area seems to make no sense. How can he move large equipment from field to field? Then there are the issues of farm smells when spreading manure and dust when tilling fields.  City folk don’t like these inconveniences. Other farmers are concerned that the  location of the new municipal wells adjacent to farms instead of on the development lands, will interfere with cattle operations because of well head protection regulations. Weren’t the farmers there first? And how does a rural township approve urban style development on Class One farmland? So many questions and so few answers. Council meetings usually start at 6, but we are asking those concerned about our agricultural community to show up at the township Administrative Offices on Nursery Rd. at 5:30 p.m. Perhaps Council is unfamiliar with what farm equipment looks like and how its operated. It can’t hurt to bring along our tractors, friends and neighbours and of course a few signs to let them know our feelings.
