Top experts, senior officials to discuss how we can control invasives in Simcoe County
AWARE Simcoe news release – March 12 2012
AWARE Simcoe is focusing the spotlight on invasive plant species that are devastating the natural environment in Simcoe County. This is an urgent concern, and all Simcoe County residents need to know what these plants look like and join the battle to halt their spread.
To that end, AWARE Simcoe has organized a meeting that bring together experts and officials who are responding to this threat. Residents from across the county are invited to learn more and help shape the response.
When  Saturday April 14,   9:30-12:30pm
Where Elmvale Arena [Springwater room] 13   George St., Elmvale
The meeting will start with presentations by three panellists:
Orillia naturalist Bob Bowles will describe 10 of the most threatening invasive plants – Giant Hogweed, Garlic Mustard,  Dog-strangling Vine, Common Reed (Phragmites), Japanese Knotweed, Glossy Buckthorn, Common Buckthorn, Periwinkle (Vinca), Bishop’s Goutweed and Norway Maple.
Rachel Gagnon,  coordinator of the Ontario Invasive Plant Council, will talk about efforts being made by volunteer groups around the province 
Ericka Weisz,  invasive species biologist with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, will talk about government’s role.
Other participants include Jeff Monague Beausoleil First   Nation, Graeme Davis Simcoe County Forester, David Featherstone, Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority.
All are welcome. Refreshments provided.
