A good example of materials separation and reuse

Simcoe County has been diverting 5,000 to 6,000 tonnes a year of asphalt shingles from the landfill by shipping them to private processors at considerable expense.
Now the county is working on a pilot project that uses existing equipment to grind the shingles and turn them into a product that can be used in road surfacing. This winter will show whether the product holds up in adverse conditions.  The cost savings are estimated at $500,000 a year, mainly in transportation. This is a good example of materials separation and reuse and the waste management division is to be congratulated.

IS THERE A FEE FOR DROPPING OFF MY SHINGLES? WHERE WOULD I DROP THEM OFF?

    • Kate Harries - Elmvale says:

There is a fee – but it is reduced. You drop them off at the nearest waste transfer station. Call the county at 705-726-9300 for details.
