Following are policy positions taken by AWARE Simcoe at its public meeting in Alliston on June 25 2011
Resolution on mega-quarry
WHEREAS the proposed Highlands Companies mega-quarry is unprecedented in size, magnitude and impact on the environment, agriculture and local communities;
AND WHEREAS the proposed mega-quarry is located in the recharge area of several major river systems, affecting sensitive eco-systems and the drinking water of more than a million Ontario residents
AWARE Simcoe calls on Ontario Environment Minister John Wilkinson to designate the proposed mega-quarry so that all aspects of the project can be evaluated under the Environmental Assessment Act through a full environmental assessment.
Resolution on CETA
AWARE Simcoe is opposed to any free trade agreement that reduces the ability of governments, especially local and provincial governments, to act on behalf of citizens, and give new powers to international corporations;
AWARE Simcoe calls on the Canadian and Ontario governments to ensure that the negotiations for the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) be fully transparent with opportunity for input from the public;
AWARE Simcoe demands that the proposed agreement will not interfere with the right of governments to regulate in the public interest, protect public services, or create new public programs; and
AWARE Simcoe demands that the provincial government exempt municipalities from CETA.
