Simcoe County waste program in need of wise leadership
Open letter to Simcoe County council
from Kelly Clune, Orillia May 5 2011
The county must implement a fair, effective waste collection system — one that places financial responsibilities on the people and industries that generate the waste.
A user-pay system for garbage offers financial savings for people who reduce waste — those that don’t, pay the price.
The county must change who pays for garbage, and who pays for bluebox recycling and compost collection. These programs are expensive.
An effective, fair system is possible. A user-pay system is fair and needed.
Residents who use the county’s programs should no longer subsidize those who do not recycle or compost. Taxpayers should no longer subsidize industry products/packaging.
The county’s current garbage program is draining our finances, destroying resources and eliminating local job opportunities. We need wise leadership to get serious about waste, and fast!
