Route could benefit both municipalities, says Davidson

An expansion of Barrie’s transit system could have benefits for both the city and Innisfil, says deputy mayor Dan Davidson.
Town council granted staff permission to approach City of Barrie officials over the expansion of bus service into the lands annexed through the Barrie-Innisfil Boundary Adjustment Act last year. However, council will not specifically request a route along a stretch of Big Bay Point Road, the 25th Sideroad, Lockhart Road and Yonge Street — a recommendation contained in the original plan — to allow for greater negotiating flexibility.
“These roads are already mostly assumed by Barrie,” said Davidson. “There’s a fairly large population in that area. We could use these buses to their maximum availability. We’re going to see what we can do. All we’re doing is looking at the possibility of expanding (service).”
An expanded route could eventually be used to link the city’s service to Innisfil Beach Road, the Innisfil Recreation Complex, and other key sites within the northern portion of the town, he said.
CAO John Skorobohacz says the plan will give officials an opportunity to explore areas of ‘mutual benefit’ while attempting to address the region’s transit needs.
“(This) would allow us to enter into discussions with a clean slate,” he said. “It’s not prescriptive, in terms of a specific route. It gives us a chance to explore whatever makes sense.”
However, others worry the town may be unfairly pressuring Barrie officials.
“I’m struggling a little bit with this,” said councillor Lynn Dollin. “I’m struggling with us giving direction to another municipality on where to put their buses. I wouldn’t take it very kindly if we got a motion from the city, telling us we should be doing business (in a certain way).”
Davidson says Barrie’s transportation committee will be asking city council to formally participate in negotiations, during an upcoming meeting.
