It could soon cost $10 for a garage sale permit.
That’s just one of the price increases in a new fees schedule that council is being asked to approve when it meets next Wednesday. If approved, the fees will take effect April 1.
The proposed increases will cover a range of services, such as photo copying, marriage licences, civil ceremonies, taxi cab stands, reports and letters,
licences, parking spaces, inspections, a wide range of fire department services and materials provided by the planning department.
Coun. Patricia File questioned why fees for basic services – documents that citizens may need – might be were rising.
Town clerk Andrea Fay replied that staff have been asked to look at ways of generating revenue. She said most bylaws are on the town website, but would be emailed free if a person wanted a copy.
Coun. Bob Jeffery noted that provincial laws say the town cannot make a profit by charging costs. “If somebody wants to challenge the costs they can. The staff will have to justify it.”
(A copy of the proposed fee schedule is contained in the general committee agenda, which can be downloaded from the town website).
