General committee is recommending continuing the one-third tax free expense allowance for council members.
The Municipal Act allows one-third of the remuneration paid to elected members of councils and local boards to be considered as expenses related to discharging their duties.
Ted Walker, the town’s chief administrative officer, explained it means they only pay taxes on two-thirds of their salary.
The basic salary of council members is $17,398, while the Deputy Mayor receives $25,554 and the Mayor $38,060.
