The proponent is Ontario Recycling, which operates a similar facility in Toronto. Consultant Conestoga-Rovers and Associates is handling the firm’s application to the Township for Site Plan Approval, and to the Ontario Ministry of the Environment for a Certificate of Approval for a waste transfer and processing site.
” AWARE Oro-Medonte is pleased that Ontario Recycling is showing a transparency that offers the public an opportunity to participate in the process of developing plans for this operation. With this sort of co-operation, the proponent is displaying a willingness to consider the community and the concerns that may be raised,” said Bernard Pope of AWARE Oro-Medonte.
AWARE Oro-Medonte is urging the public to attend this open information session and review Ontario Recycling’s plans for their new facility.
“That way they can get any questions they might have, addressed in public,” Pope said.
In a submission last November 2010 to the MOE, Bernard Pope of AWARE Oro-Medonte raised concerns about leachate, waste storage noise, dust and toxic gases. Pope also asked for assurance that the ministry and local authorities would institute an inspection regime to ensure that the facility is operated within the parameters stated in the Certificate of Approval.
In a response to Pope, Fred Taylor of Conestoga–Rovers wrote that Ontario Recycling has no intent or interest in receiving solid waste or garbage or liquid waste.
“The facility will recycle dry construction and demolition materials such as drywall, wood, metal, plastic, and concrete and as such provides a community based sustainability solution instead of landfilling a lot of otherwise recyclable materials.”
AWARE Oro-Medonte then asked for a public meeting to address their concerns. Ontario Recycling agreed and set the meeting for next Tuesday.
The purpose of the session will be to introduce Ontario Recycling owners and management and CRA’s engineering design and permitting team. There will be a brief presentation followed by a question and answer session.
