Wasaga Beach: Single polling station absurd
Letter to Simcoe.com November 2 2010
Yesterday’s debacle which happened during our municipal election was to put it bluntly, an aberration of our voting system.
To have only one polling station at the RecPlex was absurd.
The lineups, which took place all day long, reeked of trying to cast one’s vote in some third world country.
When I questioned the reasoning of having only one polling station available, I was told that this was the only way it could be done as all of the computers had to be in the same location. Nonsense.
This is Canada folks – surely the technology exists where numerous polling stations throughout Wasaga Beach could have been linked together and the votes all tallied.
I believe the term used to accomplish such a feat is called networking and we have many fine computer gurus who know how this can be done.
My personal wait in line was about 40 minutes and I witnessed one elderly lady go down and crack her head on the concrete. What a disgusting way to treat our seniors.
In closing I would like to say that I have no doubt whatsoever that the voter turnout was pathetic.
Well I again witnessed many people driving into the parking lot and then commenting on the lineup and immediately turning around and leaving. So the voter turnout wasn’t pathetic – the way the voters were treated was pathetic.
Stan Drozdoski,
Wasaga Beach.
