Elect those who care

Letter to the Barrie Examiner – September 9 2010
Let’s all agree that it is next to impossible to get a real professional to represent any ward in Barrie. A highly-educated architect, or a designer, would not work for the money the city pays to the elected councilors. This is why we are paying money to the consultants who advise us to do things we can’t afford, or do not have courage to change.
We can’t elect people to build and maintain our city just for being nice or being a professional in some other field. We can’t elect a nice librarian to be a doctor, and we can’t send a nice plumber to a figure skating championship just for being nice. We need professionals in our city desperately, because we all see what our city is turning into. It’s a shame to have a train depot on the lakeshore. It’s a shame to have the roads like in developing countries. It’s a shame to dump Barrie taxpayers into the mud at the so-called bus stops along Mapleview and at Minet’s Point. If we can’t afford professionals, we should elect those who care.
