Are candidates snubbing accountability and transparency?
EDGAR ON, SEPTEMBER 23, 2010, AWARE Oro-Medonte news release – A number of Oro-Medonte candidates, including all but one incumbent, have chosen not to answer the election questionnaire sent out by AWARE Oro-Medonte, in an apparent snub of our efforts to promote accountability and transparency at the local level. They also refused to be interviewed by the citizens group.
This is a clear illustration of the problem that led to the formation of the AWARE Simcoe organization; politicians refusing to answer our questions and provide information that we believe should be made public. The AWARE Oro-Medonte questionnaire touches on issues we consider important and also offers candidates a chance to set out their own priorities. At election time, we expect politicians to seize on every opportunity to provide information to voters about their position on important issues.
Unfortunately in Oro-Medonte, that does not seem to be the case. Elsewhere in Simcoe County, AWARE groups are getting a good response from candidates, many of whom are welcoming our efforts to raise public interest in the isssues that face municipal and county governments.
We know that providing answers takes time out of a busy campaign, but we believe that by posting the answers on our website we are giving candidates an extra venue to reach voters.
Six out of the 14 Oro-Medonte candidates have responded:
Sandy Agnew (Incumbent)
David Edwards
Marty Lancaster
Gordon Roehner
Joannie Spence
Nancy Stoddart
Their answers have been posted on our website
