AWARE Simcoe note: We fought to get the Nottawasaga River included in the Navigation Protection Act – and we won. But the NPA does not protect our waters in the way the ancient Navigable Waters Protection Act did, so we support this campaign for a return to meaningful legislation to preserve Canada’s lakes and rivers for future generations.

from Council of Canadians

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has begun a major review of our water laws.

Four years ago, the Harper government removed protections from 99% of the lakes and rivers in Canada under the Navigable Waters Protection Act and gutted other important environmental and water laws. This paved the way for industrial projects that could threaten water, leaving it vulnerable to dams, mining, pipelines, logging, fish farms, liquefied fracked gas terminals and more.

But you can stop this.

The Trudeau government’s review of the Navigation Protection Act – formerly named the Navigable Waters Protection Act – is underway. Public consultations are crucial to get input from communities from coast to coast. We should all have a say about water.

Big Oil companies lobbied the Harper government to exempt pipelines from regulation under the Navigable Waters Protection Act and they don’t want these protections restored. So right now they are using their deep pockets and political connections to lobby the Trudeau government to keep things as they were under Harper.

This is our chance to assert the people’s call for these protections to not only be restored, but strengthened as part of a new 21st-century national water policy.

But right now industry lobbyists from Big Oil & Gas and mining are using their deep pockets and political connections to stop that from happening at all costs.
