Springwater news release November 09, 2012
The Township of Springwater Council has determined that it will not pursue the casino opportunity in Zone C7.
On May 17, 2012 the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) issued RFI 1213-001 for Modernizing Land Based Gaming in Ontario. Through this modernization, OLG is proposing 5 new gaming facilities in 5 defined zones. Springwater, along with Wasaga Beach, Clearview and Collingwood are within Zone C7 identified as being the potential location for a new casino.
Springwater, Wasaga Beach, Clearview and Collingwood have been working closely to: research the impact that a casino will have on the host communities; seek input from ratepayers; determine which lands are suitable for a casino; and, share resources where required. A media campaign has been used to inform ratepayers and an information session, hosted by all four municipalities, was held on October 16, 2012 with OLG.
“Springwater has reviewed the land based requirements for servicing a casino and has determined that a site for the casino cannot be found in Springwater within the Zone C7 designation” said Mayor Linda Collins, “As a result of this analysis Springwater will not be pursuing this opportunity. Council looks forward to supporting our municipal partners in their due diligence on this matter”.
Springwater will continue to work with Clearview, Wasaga Beach and Collingwood to provide staff resources as these communities determine the feasibility for a casino within their jurisdictions.
