Letter to the Midland Mirror October 18 2010
MIDLAND – Re: “We must be responsible for garbage we produce,” Letters, Oct. 12.
Gord McKay researched other communities and discovered solutions that go well beyond the question of garbage pickup. He is aware that the industries that produce waste also need to be more responsible in both products and packaging.
He was inspired to start a citizen organization, Zero Waste Simcoe, with the goal of moving Simcoe County in the direction of waste reduction. Zero Waste Simcoe lends grassroots support to provincial efforts to promote the goal of zero waste.
In spite of resistance, McKay worked tirelessly to have the Stantec report include the fundamental goal of reducing the waste in Simcoe County – not just diverting it from landfill.
