Town council needs change
Re: Candidates outline policies, Sept. 30
Letter to Bradford Topic October 7 2010
Am I the only taxpayer in Bradford West Gwillimbury who is stunned by Mayor Doug White’s announcement that he is proud to say he is attached at the hip with Deputy Mayor Dennis Roughley?
Good grief, is this town council or high school? Does he really mean it when he infers that we take both or we take neither?
I would hope Mr. White would be eager to work with whatever council we, the taxpayers, vote into office, but apparently not.
This kind of cronyism is exactly why a change is needed in Bradford West Gwillimbury council.
What a perfect arrangement if either Mr. White or Mr. Roughley had to work with a counterpart that wouldn’t rubber stamp every initiative, but would instead offer a sound, sober second thought to the ‘spend with reckless abandon’ attitude under which the current council seems to operate. We desperately need a council that doesn’t need to hire a consultant for every decision.
We have seen little of value accomplished by this council that wasn’t already started many years ago by the councils of Frank Jonkman.
What we have seen is a profusion of big box type stores and malls that are filled with a significant number of banks and retailers that were running their businesses in Bradford West Gwillimbury already. That’s not new tax revenue and that’s not new job opportunities.
What are new are Walmart and Home Depot, and none of us can work, live and play in Bradford West Gwillimbury on those wages.
We haven’t seen the employment lands and we haven’t seen Toromont Industries; there isn’t even a firm date available for Toromont’s arrival.
You can be assured the payments for the recreation centre and the library won’t wait until Toromont rides into town.
We desperately need to vote in a council that is fiscally responsible or our taxes, which are already the highest in the county, are going to be in the stratosphere.
