MIDLAND — One of the 18 people facing mischief charges in relation to last summer’s Site 41 protest is in hospital after suffering a stroke.
Ina Wood, 76, and her husband, Keith, were the first two people to be charged by provincial police at the landfill, located north of Elmvale.
H0wever, Ina Wood reportedly suffered a stroke two weeks ago and remains in Midland’s Huronia District Hospital, with her husband by her side. The group that organized the protests says she’s “struggling to recover.”
The protesters are alleged to have prevented construction workers from entering the landfill property for several weeks during the blockade, which began in May.
The alleged mischief-makers, or their lawyers, are scheduled to appear in Midland court tomorrow. Three of the suspects, from Beausoleil First Nation, have also been charged with intimidation.
Simcoe County councillors voted in September to abandon the Conc. 2 East property as a landfill site, after it came up against staunch opposition.
