Supporters of Stop Dump Site 41 are contacting MPPs to ask that they support Bill 32, a Private Member’s Bill being put forward by Simcoe North MPP Garfield Dunlop that is scheduled for second reading at the Ontario legislature on November 19.
Entitled An Act to prevent the disposal of waste at Site 41 in Tiny Township, the bill received first reading on March 28, 2008. It calls for revocation of the Certificate of Approval for Site 41, something SDS41 supporters consider important because of fears that a dump remains as possibility as long as the the site is licensed.
Simcoe County Council voted to halt construction and future development of DS41 in September but refused to consider a proposal to ask the Ontario Ministry of the Environment to revoke the C of A. SDS41 supporters have launched a ‘Restore and Revoke’ campaign pressing for full rehabilitation and decommission of Site 41, as well as revocation of the C of A.
Bill 32 also provides for the Ontario government to compensate Simcoe County for reasonable expenses it incurred after April 30, 1998 and before April 22, 2004 for the purpose of using Site 41 to dispose of waste.
